Let’s see if we can find ideas to beat winter, cold, snowy, rainy days. Just comment and I’ll get a page or a post getting all our ideas together.

Seem stuck at zero about doing new exercises.  See my blog, http://www.alittleredhen.com for 10/28/08 for a bit more detail.  Also mentioned this in comment to Sara.  sigh.

Holly asked me to let you know that her work was over-the-top before she left for a week in Mexico–and she will be reporting in on her return. Continue reading

Lia – Clean Slate

Oh, dear ElderExercisers please forgive the two weeks silence. I’ve been visiting family in Canada. We spent sometime in Montreal and Toronto. My walking schedule was fine; I managed to do between 5,000 and 8,000 steps every day, and most were above 7,000 steps. Many days, with the help of my sister’s and her partner’s two dogs need to run in the woods, I managed over 7,000 steps. Feeling quite good about this, since many past visits were spent talking and eating.

Now I am back to work and trying the best I can to keep up the walking between 5-10 thousands. Wish me luck.

Sara – also so…so…so…

Responding to Claude’s gentle nudge here!  I am a bit late also.  No dancing yet this week but I am going with some friends to a “dancing” at a restaurant which is a sort of Oktoberfest, with a German band called The Bavarian Stompers.  There will be lots of polkas, which is a very energetic jumpy three-quarter time dance.  Probably the Pennsylvania Polka, always a favorite up here!

Sun. Oct. 19 – 6485 steps (2022 aerobic), 148 calories, 2.25 miles; 100 reps cardioglide.

Mon. Oct. 20 – 7655 steps (3575 aerobic), 191 calories, 2.65 miles – out to dinner, ate fish and yummy cheese biscuits… 🙂

Tues. Oct. 21 – 6635 steps (3674 aerobic), 149 calories, 2.30 miles, 200 jumps on the indoor trampoline

Wed. Oct. 22 – 9000 steps (3866 aerobic), 207 calories, 3.12 miles.

Thurs. Oct. 23 – 3601 steps (0 aerobic), 93 calories, 1.25 miles.

Fri. Oct. 24 – 9126 steps (6134 aerobic), 210 calories, 3.16 miles.  Ended the day with fried green tomatoes!

Sat. Oct. 25 – 6489 steps (3992 aerobic), 150 calories, 2.25 miles, 110 reps cardioglide.

Well, maybe not so awfully so…so!  I just like it when I can break 10,000.  But then, Penn State beat Ohio State for the first time in 30 years, so one of these days I will be able to do a bit more.

Our singles club here is having an “introduction to the gym” party next Saturday at a gym near me, with finger food and demonstrations.  so I may end up joining the gym again.  I haven’t really missed it…but with the weather occasionally very rainy and unpleasant, it might be good to have that option.  We shall see!

I think I actually managed to put that little picture in!  Yay me!  Happy walking, everyone!

Claude – so so week

I’m one day late, and have no excuses 😉 Only it was medical week, and I was away for two days and visited with my friend Annik, and luckily we had nice weather.
Anyway, here goes
Sat Oct. 18: 10,000 steps
Sunday Oct. 19: felt lazy and just went to the market. So this was only 3,000 steps

Choosing mushrooms

Monday Oct. 20: a rather good day since I went for a medical exam which turned out ok. My previous gynecologist had “diagnosed” a cyst on my left ovary that she recommended I had removed 😦
Going to a specialist was well worth it. It isn’t a cyst but some sort of scar and there’s no point in touching it as it is totally innocuous… When dealing with doctors, it’s sometimes good to trust your own instincts!
So I celebrated by walking 14,800 steps, (6200 aerobic steps)
Tuesday Oct.21 was mammogram day 😥 I hate mammograms. But the doctor gave me a clean bill of health so it’s all right. She was so late that I missed my Feldenkrais class 😦 and as it was pouring, I only managed 5,240 steps
Wed. Oct. 22, we went to Beauval Zoo (I love zoos) and walked 6,720 steps none of them aerobic, as I stopped to photograph animals!
Thursday Oct 23, we went shopping! I bought the greatest bag to hold my swimming attire. But mind you, I haven’t been to the swimming-pool two Mondays in a row. Tomorrow?
Still, we walked 8,000 steps
Friday Oct 24, I had my one-hour stretching class. I usually go walking after that, but I just had to take a day’s rest. So no walking on Friday.

Remember everyone! We have all agreed to post once a week! Nudge, nudge…

Naomi – Oct. 13 – 20 Change is hard…

Disappointing week with less consistent step accumulation.  Only have recorded 5,000 or above.  Also had to face how difficult it is for me to do home-based exercise and any other than walking.

Oct. 13 – 5,353 steps 1,127 aerobic.

Oct. 16 – 8,329 steps

Oct. 17 – Weight dropped to 139 pounds…forgot pedometer.

Oct. 18 – Two hours in dentist’s chair

Oct. 19 – 5,094 steps

Oct. 20 – 5,105 steps.  Tried following what Sara explained about aerobic steps but did not happen.  Will try another time.  20 minutes with stretch bands.

Sara: It’s getting colder here…

Hi, everyone, we have had some near-freezing temperatures overnight during the last week, then some lovely Indian summer.  Work continues to be rather continuous but I was fortunate to be able to have two days off in a row, today and yesterday, so I feel somewhat restored.

Fri. Oct. 10 – 10,707 steps (6749 aerobic), 265 calories, 3.71 miles.  I was carrying groceries so was walking more slowly for half of those aerobic steps…you will see the relevance in a moment…

Sat. Oct. 11 – 9447 steps (1875 aerobic), 264 calories, 3.27 miles.  This was not very many aerobic steps, but they were fast ones, and the calorie burn was nearly the same.  Very interesting.  BRISK walking seems a key to calorie burn.  I conclude that if I have had a somewhat sluggy day, I can still redeem it somewhat by getting out and doing 10-15 minutes of BRISK walking.  YES!

Sun. Oct. 12 – 6159 steps, 133 calories, 2.13 miles, 200 reps on the cardioglide.  I did a lot of digging this day, since I had to divide and transplant a peony.  Whoof, they have lots of very tough entwined roots!  I needed help to even hold the thing down so as to pull it apart with a digging fork…

Mon. Oct. 13 – 5776 steps (2421 aerobic), 127 calories, 2 miles.

Tues. Oct. 14 – I forgot to wear my pedometer, I was so busy, it was the day for my kids’ choirs.  1384 steps, after I remembered to put it on! 200 reps on cardioglide.

Wed. Oct. 15 – 9353 steps (5243 aerobic), 224 calories, 3.24 miles.  240 reps cardioglide.

Thurs. Oct. 16 – 4452 steps (1896 aerobic), 97 calories, 1.54 miles.  250 cardioglide.

Fri. Oct. 17 – Contradancing!  10,772 steps (991 aerobic, which must have been that one dance that wore everyone out completely!), 274 calories, 3.74 miles, cardio 120 reps.  But I used up those calories right away by eating yummy cookies with icing on them… 😦

Sat.  Oct. 18 – 11,930 steps (8129 aerobic), 284 calories, 4.14 miles.  Cardio 140.  I shopped at several places that I usually drive to, and tried walking instead.  Weekends are the best time for me to do this.

Contradance weekends always give me a lift for walking and everything else!  I am also happy that despite those cookies, my weight came up at 146.5 this morning.  And I am pleased that I’ve been able to do the cardioglide thing more regularly, I think it does help.

Happy walking, everyone!  It’s great to see Sandy back walking again and nice to be hearing more from Holly!

Claude – a bit under the weather this week

Saturday Oct 9 went to a 2-hour Feldenkrais workshop, 2,700 steps (getting there and back)
Sunday Oct 10, didn’t feel really well. Have been suffering from diarrhea lately and this doesn’t help me at all with exercising 😦 3,000 steps, just went to the market and back.
Monday Oct 11, no swimming-pool but I did walk 10,000 steps
Tuesday Oct 12, 9,000 steps (4500 aerobic steps) 1-hour Feldenkrais session
Wednesday Oct, 12,474 steps, 13, 35mn brisk walking
Thursday Oct 13, really felt like I needed rest, so took it. Stayed at home all day and didn’t even get dressed.
Friday Oct 14, 1-hour stretching session, 10,500 steps (1,600 aerobic steps)

Last week, I felt great so I did so good exercise. This week was more difficult. But it was also a week when I went to an opera one evening and to a play the next evening. Exercise was alright on those two days, but the day after, I was just tired and needed rest.
Of course, this week I haven’t achieved my goal of at least three brisk exercise sessions. But on the positive side, I am trying to learn is to listen to my body.

Sandy – 9th to 15th October

I hesitate to record my scores after reading previous posts but there is a slight improvement on last week.

Thursday: 4665  including a walk round town.

Friday: 4605    and some gardening

Saturday:  1920  (sore muscles!)

Sunday:  2315

Monday: 2565

Tuesday: 1951

Wednesday: 2658

The reduction in steps later in the week is due to the fact that the knee seemed a bit creaky and I had to revert to wearing the support. However, I have been up and downstairs more than usual. Going up is much easier but coming down is still a bit insecure.

The only exercises I do are the gentle ones the doctor gave me to strengthen leg muscles. At present I think biking may be optimistic because of the creaking but there is definite improvement in getting about.

Holly – Oct 7 to 12

The pedometer is really helping me want to walk everywhere ~ anything to get more steps in!

Tues Oct 7 – 8854
Wed Oct 8 – 4822
Thurs Oct 9 – 2269
Fri Oct 10 – 7803
Sun Oct 12 – upwards of 9000

As Naomi posted earlier, I did indeed do canvassing for Obama in suburban Bucks County, Pa. and walked for hours with a partner, ended up knocking on something like 78 doors. Had the pedometer in my bag and then to my extreme dismay when I took it out later to gleefully see what my steps were, as I rested my aching back and legs sitting on a park bench, the counter read ZERO. Somehow I had erased the memory of the steps for that day.

To say I was annoyed was putting it mildly as I was extremely curious to see what the three hours of walking had accomplished… but I just let it go and became very zen-like about it. Onward and Upward, indeed!
