About Claude

72 years old, delighted to be retired, living in Paris. I love taking long walks and taking photographs.

This is goodbye, I guess

When Lynn, who has been faithful to the end asked where we all were, I should have replied sooner, but I was busy with my darn knee.
What happened on this blog is that slowly but surely, everyone lost interest. I for one, found another place, which had more resources than we had here, thanks to Sara, who introduced me to it.
I started on SparkPeople in June, and for a while, kept reporting about my exercise at both places. After a while, I also felt like it was not my “job” to nudge members into posting and when the only commenter is a former member 😉 maybe we should close down. If you all agree, this is what I am going to do and say goodbye.
Sara, Lynn and myself have moved to SparkPeople on a private (at the moment) team called… ElderExercise. If you wish to join us there, just drop either of us a note and we’ll send you an invite.

It was nice while it lasted, but it’s time to move on.

Hello!

Claude – two cold weeks

I can’t say that my knee condition has improved all that much with the injection. I still can’t stretch out my right leg or walk fast for a long period of time. Actually I have given up on brisk walking after the last time, when my knee really hurt like hell afterwards. But I do walk at home, when I’m on the phone, or watching TV. I find that talking on the phone makes time pass and I end up adding up quite a few steps. Not as efficient as walking outside, but much better than sitting on my butt 😉
Here are my two exercise weeks from Monday, December 6, to Sunday, December 19, 2010
Monday: 25 flexibility routine, 20 PT, 2×10 thighmaster, 4800 steps (day spent at IKEA, very tiring, but very few steps)

Claude – a snowy week

It’s been a snowy week in Paris. The snow doesn’t really stick, but it’s cold and there have been two days when it snowed quite a bit, including today.
A lot of the steps that appear on my pedometer are taken at home, while I’m on the phone or watching TV 🙂
Last Wednesday, I saw a knee surgeon, who said that, sure, eventually, I was heading towards a knee replacement, but that meanwhile, he thought it was worth trying a corticoid injection. I liked the guy, he explained everything and took time to clarify a certain number of issues. Contrary to the other doctor I saw, he thought that draining the cyst would be painful and useless, as the cyst was the result of inflammation and not the cause.
As always when someone agrees with me, I decided to trust him. 😉
So this morning, I had the jab, and must admit that this man is excellent at jabs. I hardly felt anything. Now it’ll take time to know if the corticoids are effective or not, but at least, the procedure was really painless. I sort of feel ridiculous for worrying so much about it now.
I have returned to flickr as my friends Leo and Elly have sent me a Christmas treat in the form of a flickr year subscription

Claude – injection NOT done

After spending nights worrying about that cyst draining and injection, which may sound ludicrous, for such a small procedure, I decided to ask for second opinion. I figured there was no point doing something that I really didn’t feel to be the right thing for me. I now have two addresses of competent surgeons and am seeing one this Wednesday. I’ll see what he says. Meanwhile, instead of taking 3 painkillers a day (I was waiting for the knee to hurt), I moved on to 4 and am feeling better. The difficulty stretching out my leg is still there, of course, and so is the pain, if I sit for a long time, but it’s more tolerable this way.
The cold has settled in, November and December are definitely not my favourite months, but no one’s giving me a choice so I try to walk on.

Claude – MRI, doctors and more doctors

With quite a bit of exercise in between though.
Sorry not having posted last week, but I really had the feeling all I did was see different doctors!
I got the report of the MRI, which says basically that my meniscus has a tear, that there is something wrong with a flap underneath it, the whole thing resulting in a cyst of 2cm by 5cm, full of synovial liquid, which is the cause of my not being able to extend my leg.
Then the sports doctor I’ve been seeing said that I would, eventually, have to go through surgery, but she advises to postpone it as much as possible as it seems there may be unwelcomed consequences with bones and such after surgery. So she advised for the cyst to be drained and for an injection of corticoids. I made an appointment for that, this coming Friday.
I must tell you that I am not looking forward to this, as I am extremely fearful of physical pain 😉
I also had an appointment with my cholesterol doctor, so did some blood tests, which showed that my cholesterol count was back to normal. That was already quite satisfactory, but he also decided to stop my blood pressure medication for a while and see what happens. It’s been two weeks and although we don’t know if it’ll keep low, at the moment, it’s really OK. So I’m enjoying the no-pills moment while it lasts.

Claude – chilly and rainy week

I went for the MRI last Friday and haven’t had a full report yet. I will have to pick it up this coming Wednesday, but the doctor said that my meniscus has a small tear and that there’s some sort of thing that swims around, from what I understood. He said that there are two ways of handling it, the first way being to do nothing and hope it’ll fix itself, and the second to go through arthroscopic surgery.
I will have to see the specialist who prescribed the MRI to see what she says, and that’s next week Wednesday.
I honestly don’t know how long one would have to wait until anything fixes itself. It’s already been almost three months… But we’ll see what happens next week.
Meanwhile, I go on taking painkillers and exercising.
I’ve taken to walking at home, sans Leslie Sansone, since the weather is pretty awful and it keeps me from trying to walk too fast and hurt my knee. I’d say it’s better than nothing!

Claude – Happy November exercise

For reasons that I don’t wish to delve in, my MRI is postponed to next Friday.
I have to learn patience, which is certainly not one of my virtues 😉
Meanwhile, thanks to Sara, besides ElderExercise, I have been exploring SparkPeople, an exercise and dieting site. I am mostly interested in the exercise aspect and have found a trove of useful suggestions, examples, videos and more. It does have loads of annoying ads, but that’s the price to pay, I guess to have all these resources free.
I unfortunately belong to the category of people who think that if they can’t do it perfectly, I might as well NOT do it. Applied to exercise, it translates into: if I can’t do a 60mn workout, what’s the point?
Well, here are three articles that I found quite helpful:
Small Bits of Fitness Add Up
Squeezing in exercise
How much sitting is too much (this one especially dedicated to Nancy)

Enough babbling, here’s my exercise week from Monday October, 25, to Sunday, October 31, 2010.
