Lynn–still busy

I think that title will apply for the next couple of posts as I surge forward with getting my house ready for a visitor who hasn’t been here in a few years and try to get things wrapped up at work. (It’s not that my daily living conditions are sloppy and dirty 😉 but over time, things accumulate and I’m taking this opportunity to do a different level of cleaning.)

Thank you for everyone’s kind words about Indigo’s death. When I have more time, I’ll post a photo of him. He was the last of 3 cats who’d kept my house warm over the past 17 years.

Thanksgiving was lovely. Sara’s turkey photo makes my mouth water in remembrance of the bird that graced our table.

I haven’t been very consistent with exercise or with tracking what I did and I suspect that this will continue until after the holidays.

Monday 11/22–Leslie Sansone 2 mile walk–stopped a bit short b/c of sore knees–did about 25 minutes worth

Tuesday 11/23–10 minute outdoor walk plus 1/2 hour of strength/stretch work

Wednesday and Thursday–no exercise (unless you count eating a big meal )

Friday 11/26–Walk outside 25 minutes, 30 minutes stretch/strength workout

Saturday and Sunday–Lots of busyness, much of it physical but no dedicated exercise.

Monday 11/29–work and chorus after work–no exercise.

Nancy — I’ve returned

Like others, my life spun out of control. I had no idea until I started this post that I disappeared for over 4 weeks!

I managed to continue exercising for most of the past four weeks but I was mentally exhausted by the time I got home at night that turning on the computer required more effort than I could manage.  If it was possible to retire tomorrow I would.  As a to last at my job for the next 10 years I’m thinking of changing my area of research.  It is amusing (not in a funny way) that the people I have to interact with who do research on honey bees (a social insect) have no social skills. It got so bad a few years ago that my Department Head hired a consultant/psychologist to work with us. Unfortunately, all efforts to help the group function failed. While it was nice to be assured by this person that I was not the problem, I still have to work with these ….

Anyway, Thanksgiving was great.  I love this holiday. Sara already posted one of her pictures and here is another one with Sam carving the bird and his mom (Mickey) watching. Sam is a turkey maven.  He babies that bird all the while it is cooking. We have so much left over turkey!

Claude – injection NOT done

After spending nights worrying about that cyst draining and injection, which may sound ludicrous, for such a small procedure, I decided to ask for second opinion. I figured there was no point doing something that I really didn’t feel to be the right thing for me. I now have two addresses of competent surgeons and am seeing one this Wednesday. I’ll see what he says. Meanwhile, instead of taking 3 painkillers a day (I was waiting for the knee to hurt), I moved on to 4 and am feeling better. The difficulty stretching out my leg is still there, of course, and so is the pain, if I sit for a long time, but it’s more tolerable this way.
The cold has settled in, November and December are definitely not my favourite months, but no one’s giving me a choice so I try to walk on.

Here’s my exercise week from Monday November 22nd to Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Monday: 25mn flexibility routine, 20mn PT, 12mn warming up, 37mn cardio on elliptical, 6mn stretching, 6×15 lying single-leg raises, 4×15 chair squats, 4×15 wall pushups, standing biceps stretch, lying double knee hug, 12,500 steps
Tuesday: 25 flexibility routine, 60 gym class ( strength training + stretching), 14mn warming up, 35mn cardio on elliptical, 20mm PT, 12,500 steps
Wednesday: 25mn flexibility routine, 20mn PT, 10mn warming up, 36mn cardio on elliptical, 6 mm stretching, 14200 steps

Thursday: 25mn Flexibility routine, 20mn PT, 11mn 12mn/km, 10mn warming up, 35mn elliptical cardio, 6mn stretching, 13000 steps

Sara – made it through Thanksgiving Day – and I’m thankful!

Well, so much for good intentions.  My usual excuses apply – work work work – plus house cleaning for a choir gathering – plus concerts, bazaar, other stuff.  However it is really good for me to keep this record and sum up several weeks progress.  I WILL try to get back to every week, I will, I will…

The weather has been yucky.  When you put that with my schedule, you come up with a lot of indoors walking.  My computer issues are gradually working out however, which does help my efficiency.  For a while, I stuck to my ST intentions and I do think it helped.  But then I hit a very tired overworked period, missed a couple days cardio completely.  However, weather then got better, and I switched to outdoor walking with the 10 lb. vest – which turns out to be tiring in a very different way.  I can’t exactly describe it, you just feel that your whole body has really worked.  I’m working up to being able to wear this thing for a whole 3 miles.  Actually did it once…

Nov. 8-14
Mon. 11-8 – 11804 steps (45′ = 3 LS miles, 1 with stretchy for arms). No ST, just too tired.
Tues. 11-9 – 9316 steps (48′ = 3 LS miles, 1 with stretchy for arms). ST: grand pliés 6×10; lying abduction 4×10; lying adduction 4×8; calf raises 4×10; lying double-leg raises 3×6; bridges 2×10
Wed. 11-10 – 12192 steps (45′ = walk/run outdoors; 19′ 1 LS mile w. 2 lb. weights).  ST: ab curls 2×8; plank 1×2; side plank 2×2.
Just didn’t have it for 12′ Pilates video tonight…
Thurs. 11-11 – 10117 steps (60′ = 4 LS miles, 1 w. 2 lb. weights, 1 w. stretchy); ST dumbbell shoulder press 8×8; dumbbell lateral raise 8×8; wall pushups 6×12
Fri. 11-12 – 8585 steps (55′ = 4 LS mile super challenge) ST Leslie lunges 4×10; Leslie squats 3×10; lying abduction 4×8; bicycle crunches 1×8; grand pliés 6×10; calf raises 6×10
Sat. 11-13 – 10745 steps (51′ = 2.83 mi. outdoors) ST cat/camel stretches 3×16; 12-min Pilates abs video; ab curls 2×8; lying straight leg raises 2×8
Sun. 11-14 – 4711 steps – rest from cardio

Nov. 15-21
Mon. 11-15 – 9948 steps (62′ = 4 LS miles, 1 w. 2 lb. weights, 1 w. stretchy band) ST cat/camel stretches 2×16; dumbbell lateral raises 4×8
Tues. 11-16 – 8206 steps (38′ = 3 mi. LS with boost at end of each); Leslie lunges 4×8; Leslie squats 4×8; grand pliés 5×10; thighmaster 4×12; lying double leg raises 3×6
Wed. 11-17 – 8137 steps (30′ = 2.5 mi. LS walk/jog; 10′ Bollywood dancing video); 12-min. Pilates abs video
Thurs. 11-18 – 6609 steps (zero cardio)
Fri. 11-19 – 12715 steps (67′ = LS 5 mile challenge)
Sat. 11-20 – 6071 steps (zero cardio) – concert, busy all day, hosted choir gathering that evening
Sun. 11-21 – 12274 steps (53′ = 3 outdoors miles, 1.5 w. 10 lb. vest)

Nov. 22-25
Mon. 11-22 – 9564 steps (47′ = 3 LS miles, 1 w. 2 lb. weights, 1 w. stretchy band)
Tues. 11-23 – 17125 steps (84′ = 54′ 3 mi. outdoors w. 10 lb. vest; 30′ LS walk/jog)
Wed. 11-24 – 17401 steps (113′ = 43′ LS flat belly miles; 25′ outdoors w. vest; 45′ gardening); ST 4×10 bicycle crunches
Thurs. 11-25 (Thanksgiving Day) – 5434 steps (15′ LS mile w. 2 lb. hand weights)

As you can see I anticipated the Thanksgiving Day feed by ramping up my cardio the 2 days before.  It worked!  But I wouldn’t have done that had I not totally pigged out at the choir party and gained back to 142 lbs.  I was horrified at myself because by the end of this pigout, I was eating things I didn’t even WANT.  Just because they were there!

However, by Thursday I was back to 139, and this AM I was 139.5, which is really not bad at all.  Heading down again now, if my current resolution holds!

It is nice to be able to wear size SMALL in Lands End sport knit pants!  and size 8 in some Eddie Bauer cargo pants!  I am determined to stay here and get down to 135 by the end of the year if I possibly can.  We shall see!

And now, a little something for Claude….

Sam and “the bird!” a 32-pounder!

It was a lovely turkey!  And I have bags of it in my freezer now!  Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!  Hang in there and keep moving that body, in whatever way you choose!

Lia – Soft launch

My heavens, we all seem to be having our “issues” with our bodies and schedules and making sure we get regular exercise. I want to thank Claude for keeping us on track and not taking us to task for our unreliable blogging.

I’d like to tentatively write about a new soft launch that I have partaken on the last two weeks. I am back to walking regularly, but I can not say how long or how many steps. I am trying to give myself the luxury of going for a walk without the feeling, “Now I can check that off my list”.

I just would like a few weeks time to build up my enthusiasm and resilience, before I coem back with a daily tally. Is that all right?

The other positive step I have taken is to start (softly) with lifting weights at Kieser Training center.  This sort of weight training in centered more on health and preventative measures and less on fitness. I’ve been thinking about it for the last few years, but it took the recent neck injury to make me realise, “No time like now!”.

So, in summary, I’ve been doing 4-5 days of walking a week for the last three weeks and 2-3 times of lifting weights for 30 minutes. Think that I will try and see if I can stick to this schedule for the nexts weeks as well.

Thank you all for leaving your wonderful comments. I promise to go back and comment on your posts as well.

Claude – MRI, doctors and more doctors

With quite a bit of exercise in between though.
Sorry not having posted last week, but I really had the feeling all I did was see different doctors!
I got the report of the MRI, which says basically that my meniscus has a tear, that there is something wrong with a flap underneath it, the whole thing resulting in a cyst of 2cm by 5cm, full of synovial liquid, which is the cause of my not being able to extend my leg.
Then the sports doctor I’ve been seeing said that I would, eventually, have to go through surgery, but she advises to postpone it as much as possible as it seems there may be unwelcomed consequences with bones and such after surgery. So she advised for the cyst to be drained and for an injection of corticoids. I made an appointment for that, this coming Friday.
I must tell you that I am not looking forward to this, as I am extremely fearful of physical pain 😉
I also had an appointment with my cholesterol doctor, so did some blood tests, which showed that my cholesterol count was back to normal. That was already quite satisfactory, but he also decided to stop my blood pressure medication for a while and see what happens. It’s been two weeks and although we don’t know if it’ll keep low, at the moment, it’s really OK. So I’m enjoying the no-pills moment while it lasts.

Lynn–difficult couple of weeks

I’m afraid I don’t have much to post about exercise. Work has been really busy but even more stressful has been dealing with a very sick kitty, my old guy Indigo, who was approaching 18. He’s been sort of gradually fading away and about 2 weeks ago began looking ill. After a couple of visits to the vet and some simple remedies and some long phone conversations with the vet, I decided to have Indigo euthanized, which happened on Friday.

Plus, my sister is coming for a nice long visit, arriving in a couple of weeks, and I’m busily trying to get my house spruced up–nothing like imagining what it looks like through someone else’s eyes to get me cleaning and rearranging.

So, with all that going on, regular exercise nosedived. I have taken some walks and the house spruce up has of course been active but…

How is everyone else doing? Seems like we all might be preoccupied right now.
