About newwine

I live in Pennsylvania now but grew up in Virginia. I retired in 2013 from directing music in a large Catholic parish here, and since then I've tried to spend as much time as possible in France. Favorite pastimes -- reading, dancing, singing, taking photographs, writing, speaking French, hanging out with friends, learning about all things French.

Sara – getting back on track

Well, it’s been quite cold here – a couple of days ago I awoke to zero degrees F!   We have more cold coming this week – maybe one day approaching mere freezing – so best get used to it.

You will notice I’ve been experimenting with Bollywood Dance.  Let’s see if I can put a photo in here…

the dvd I've been using

Hm, didn’t go in as large as I wanted…oh well!  I must admit this is fun AND aerobic, but I don’ t think it burns as many calories as Leslie, so I’m back to Leslie – with perhaps some Bollywood thrown in for variety from time to time.  There is quite a lot of flexibility work however which is nice and different from Leslie.  Also lots of core movement.  and the music is great fun!  There is a playfulness in Bollywood dance that I really like – this is different from belly dancing which is pretty seriously sexy.  Bollywood is more fun sexy!

My prosaic step record –

Thurs. Jan. 13 – 12658 steps, 4261 aerobic (24′ = 1.5 mi. LS; 27′ = Bollywood Dance) ST pliés/relevés 6×8, grand pliés 3×8.
Fri. Jan. 14 – 7544 steps, 3688 aerobic (50′ Bollywood Dance)
Sat. Jan. 15 – 8321 steps, 2468 aerobic (1.05 mi. outdoors, in cold, 18′)
Sun. Jan. 16 – 4703 steps, 0 aerobic
Mon. Jan. 17 – 6847 steps, 3110 aerobic (28′ = 2 LS miles)
Tues. Jan. 18 – 11658 steps, 7191 aerobic (cardio 24′ = 1.5 mi. outdoors, 27′ = Bollywood)
Wed. Jan. `19 – 8705 steps, 4839 aerobic (37′ = 3 mi. LS, flat belly DVD)  ST = 4×10 bicycle crunches
Thurs. Jan. 20 – 6303 steps, 0 aerobic
Fri. Jan. 21 – 6197 steps, 3854 aerobic (1 mi. outdoors, 1 mi. LS with boost)
Sat. Jan. 22 – 13660 steps, 10881 aerobic (1.5 mi outdoors, 5 mi. LS – total 85 min.)

I have been overeating and not tracking my food so all that calorie burning still didn’t keep me from gaining up to 138.5.  But now after the last two days I am down again to 136 and hoping to stay there, if not a bit below, until mid-March.  I’m looking forward to experimenting with eating a bit more and trying to keep my exercise constant at 4 miles, 6 days a week, if I can.

ST = well, we’ll see!  Right now I am not feeling motivated, but maybe if I alternate ST with cardio, I can do it.

I’m also going to really try to post each Sunday night, through the day before, since sparkpeople’s week begins on Sunday.  Makes it a bit easier to transfer my doings from spark to EE.

I hope you all are well and still moving/walking/singing/elliptical-ing happily, in whatever weather conditions you have!

Sara – to Paris and back! Ooh la la!

Bonjour, tout le monde, je suis arrivé de Paris, après une bonne visite avec Claude!  OK, now I’ll return to English since my French still isn’t all that great.  Claude and I had a wonderful time hanging out together, walking, taking photos, eating, talking, etc. etc. etc.  Weather was cold but that just made it nicer going into restaurants and cafés.  I had some truly exceptional food and will share just a few photos…

But first to fill in my exercise record before leaving…

Dec. 26, 2010 – Jan. 7, 2011 – week of my trip to Paris!  Weighed 137 when I left, 139 when I returned!
Sun. Dec. 26 – 3528 steps (3 Leslie abs miles)  ST – 3×10 bicycle crunches
Mon. Dec. 27 – 10446 steps (4862 aerobic)
Tues. Dec. 28 – 10001 steps (5357 aerobic – maybe these were the Cincinnati steps…hmmm…)
Wed. Dec. 29 – 7836 steps (4215 aerobic in the Cincinnati airport during layover, sometime) – this step count is off due to resetting the pedometer.  I can’t figure it out & who cares…

I arrived in Paris early on Wednesday the 29th and Claude and I went to dinner that night at a Left Bank restaurant that I had discovered two years ago.

Our first night was spent at Le Petit Pontoise, and here is Claude anticipating dinner!

I had a beautiful leg of hare with a yummy dark brown sauce and tasty carrots and potatoes.  Claude had magret canard – orange sauce – which she said was marvelous.  We like this place!  AND it’s quite close to my hotel.
Thurs. Dec. 30 – reset time – 11686 steps (3841, incl. 22′ on Claude’s elliptical)
Fri. Dec. 31 – 20626 steps (6223 aerobic)

We spent New Year’s Eve together, eating quail with celery root and figs and Cote du Bourg red wine (can’t do that accent, Claude, it wants to close my page!)

The next morning, I set out to walk to Montparnasse and ended up bypassing Montparnasse and seeing other things.
2011:  Woo hoo!
Sat. Jan. 1 – 11971 steps (4494 aerobic)

On New Year’s Day, I ate this

tartare saumon avec frites et salade, at Au Vieux Colombier, for a very reasonable price! Delicious!

Sun. Jan. 2 – 17628 steps (5240 aerobic)

As you can see, I did a lot of walking in Paris even though I was a bit jetlagged!  Good thing, since I also did a lot of eating!  I went to Notre Dame for several festive masses on Epiphany – here is what the beautiful altar looked like

Notre Dame's high altar with crèche, Epiphany - music was incredible, Maitrises de Notre Dame!

Mon. Jan. 3 – 13510 steps, zero aerobic
Tues. Jan. 4 – 19194 steps (4986 aerobic)

I resisted the siren song of these Christmas market goodies near St. Germain des Près...

But I must confess to enjoying quite a bit of vin chaud, irresistible in the chilly weather!   It kept me walking…
Wed. Jan. 5 – 14760 steps (1123 aerobic)

I did indeed climb the 450 steps to the top of the towers of Notre Dame and here is the proof...

Thurs. Jan. 6 – 16225 steps (2085 aerobic)

One of my nicest meals was here, on rue Montagne St. Geneviève, but my exposures were off so I'm showing you the resto...

Fri. Jan. 7 – 5844 steps (flew home)  boo hoo boo hoo…there was free wine on the plane which helped me sleep a bit…and then coffee to get me ready for the 3 hour drive from Pittsburgh to home…

And now at home, my body is finally realizing that it’s not in Paris any more…
Sat. Jan. 8 – 4406 steps – pretty out of it due to jet lag – weighed 139 lbs., only 2 more than when I left!
Sun. Jan. 9 – 8678 steps (50′ cardio = 3 LS miles, 2 of them w. arms focus)
Mon. Jan. 10 – 8836 steps (54′ cardio = LS 4 mile challenge; 12′ Pilates abs video)
Tues. Jan. 11 – 7428 steps (44′ cardio = 3 LS miles, 1 legs focus, 1 fast); ST pliés/relevés 3×8 – finally began to sleep on a normal schedule!
Wed. Jan. 12 – 8876 steps (42′ cardio = 3 LS abs miles); ST bike crunches 3×8 – hit my goal weight of 135 pounds, thanks to eating differently, I think as a result of the trip.

Today I oscillated back up to 136.5 but that is to be expected.  A wonderful vacation, lots of great food and drink, and still on track – what more could one want for 2011?

I’m not making New Year’s resolutions, but I am laying a few tentative plans which I will tell you about in future posts.  For starters, I am experimenting with Bollywood Dance videos, beginning today!  I need some variety, a change from Leslie, and I may also add some Zumba, will try out some videos from Netflix.

Work begins again in earnest on Monday and there is a choir party Sunday night, so I have a few more days of improvised activity which I am looking forward to.

See you all soon again in 2011!  Hugs, Sara

Sara – almost made it through Christmas…

The period leading up to Christmas has seemed harder this year.  I’m not quite sure why, except that possibly there were more funerals…that always breaks momentum and adds to the load.  The happy thing is that I’ve been preparing to go to Paris to visit Claude, and I’ve had to get much of my early 2011 planning done before leaving.  BUT the vacation time will be so worth it!

As usual, we are preparing lots of wonderful music and this year’s choir program for Christmas Eve should be really special!  They are doing so well.  Pat-a-pan with snare drum and piccolo, Noel Nouvelet with 2 flutes, and Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella in a Robert Shaw arrangement, among other things.

here is a picture of our tree with chrismon ornaments and apples

I did fairly well with cardio and ST right after Thanksgiving – motivated to lose those extra pounds!

Nov. 26 – Dec. 4, 2010
Fri. 11-26 – 9821 steps (61 cardio min. = 4 mi. Leslie DVDs, arms focus)
Sat. 11-27 – 13312 steps (64 cardio min. = 5 mi. Leslie DVDs, abs focus); ST 4×6 bicycle crunches; 3×6 clamshell crunches with ball
Sun. 11-28 – 2667 steps – rest day
Mon. 11-29 – 13807 steps (55 cardio min. = 1.5 mi. outdoors, 2 Leslie mi – arms); ST wall pushups 6×10
Tues. 11-30 – 11052 steps (54 cardio min. = Leslie 4 mi. challenge); ST lunges 3×8, squats 4×8, thighmaster 5×10
Wed. 12-1 – 14191 steps (82 cardio min. = Leslie 6 miles); ST bicycle crunches 4×6
Thurs. 12-2 – 12714 steps (70 cardio min. = Leslie 5 mi. challenge w. arms work)
Fri. 12-3 – 12347 steps (55 cardio min. = Leslie 4 mi. – 1 abs, 1 legs focus)
Sat. 12-4 – 9074 steps (42 cardio min. = Leslie 3 mi – abs focus) ST bicycle crunches 4×6

But then I began to gradually slack off…I can hardly remember why some of these days ended up as rest days…
Dec. 5 – 11
Sun. 12-5 – 5715 steps – rest day
Mon. 12-6 – 3793 steps – no cardio
Tues. 12-7 – 9554 steps (58 cardio min. = 4.5 Leslie miles, focus legs, some jogging)
Wed. 12-8 – 9885 steps (40 cardio min. = 3 Leslie abs miles) bicycle crunches 4×12
Thurs. 12-9 – 10496 steps (56 cardio min. = 4 Leslie mi, arms focus) wall pushups 6×8
Fri. 12-10 – 11805 steps (66 cardio min. = Leslie 5 mi. challenge, arms focus)
Sat. 12-11 – 16985 steps (58 cardio min. = 1.5 mi. outdoors w. weighted vest, 2.5 Leslie miles)

This week, it was just a struggle to keep going & get in some cardio, any cardio…
Dec. 12-18
Sun. Dec. 12 – 5919 steps – rest day
Mon. Dec. 13 – 8897 steps (40 cardio min. = 3 Leslie abs miles)
Tues. Dec. 14 – 8106 steps (45 cardio min. = 3 mi Leslie boot camp – some ST exercises included – I was disappointed in this DVD)
Wed. Dec. 15 – 12648 steps (69 cardio min. = 5 mi Leslie abs focus)
Thurs. Dec. 16 – 8169 steps – no cardio
Fri. Dec. 17 – 10897 steps (57 cardio min. = 4 Leslie mi, 2 w. arms work)
Sat. Dec. 18 – 5391 steps – no cardio?  took kids caroling to nursing home

Sunday Dec. 19 was a fairly good day, I had off from work and did a good bit of cardio and walking outside.

But then Monday I fell ill, with some upper respiratory malady, and have had 3 days with no exercise whatsoever.  I managed to keep doing my rehearsals, though, and finally am getting my voice back, just in time to cantor the children’s mass tomorrow night – and then I will conduct the choir’s “midnight” mass (which happens at 11 PM) – and then I will be DONE!   And I will fly away to Gay Paree in time for 2011!

Sorry to be so absent.  I think that when i am under stress i tend to just hunker down and focus on what MUST be done, and everything else falls by the wayside.  This month, that focus has had to be on work.  I’m looking forward to 2011!  AND to a break.

Happy holidays, everyone!  🙂

Sara – made it through Thanksgiving Day – and I’m thankful!

Well, so much for good intentions.  My usual excuses apply – work work work – plus house cleaning for a choir gathering – plus concerts, bazaar, other stuff.  However it is really good for me to keep this record and sum up several weeks progress.  I WILL try to get back to every week, I will, I will…

The weather has been yucky.  When you put that with my schedule, you come up with a lot of indoors walking.  My computer issues are gradually working out however, which does help my efficiency.  For a while, I stuck to my ST intentions and I do think it helped.  But then I hit a very tired overworked period, missed a couple days cardio completely.  However, weather then got better, and I switched to outdoor walking with the 10 lb. vest – which turns out to be tiring in a very different way.  I can’t exactly describe it, you just feel that your whole body has really worked.  I’m working up to being able to wear this thing for a whole 3 miles.  Actually did it once…

Nov. 8-14
Mon. 11-8 – 11804 steps (45′ = 3 LS miles, 1 with stretchy for arms). No ST, just too tired.
Tues. 11-9 – 9316 steps (48′ = 3 LS miles, 1 with stretchy for arms). ST: grand pliés 6×10; lying abduction 4×10; lying adduction 4×8; calf raises 4×10; lying double-leg raises 3×6; bridges 2×10
Wed. 11-10 – 12192 steps (45′ = walk/run outdoors; 19′ 1 LS mile w. 2 lb. weights).  ST: ab curls 2×8; plank 1×2; side plank 2×2.
Just didn’t have it for 12′ Pilates video tonight…
Thurs. 11-11 – 10117 steps (60′ = 4 LS miles, 1 w. 2 lb. weights, 1 w. stretchy); ST dumbbell shoulder press 8×8; dumbbell lateral raise 8×8; wall pushups 6×12
Fri. 11-12 – 8585 steps (55′ = 4 LS mile super challenge) ST Leslie lunges 4×10; Leslie squats 3×10; lying abduction 4×8; bicycle crunches 1×8; grand pliés 6×10; calf raises 6×10
Sat. 11-13 – 10745 steps (51′ = 2.83 mi. outdoors) ST cat/camel stretches 3×16; 12-min Pilates abs video; ab curls 2×8; lying straight leg raises 2×8
Sun. 11-14 – 4711 steps – rest from cardio

Nov. 15-21
Mon. 11-15 – 9948 steps (62′ = 4 LS miles, 1 w. 2 lb. weights, 1 w. stretchy band) ST cat/camel stretches 2×16; dumbbell lateral raises 4×8
Tues. 11-16 – 8206 steps (38′ = 3 mi. LS with boost at end of each); Leslie lunges 4×8; Leslie squats 4×8; grand pliés 5×10; thighmaster 4×12; lying double leg raises 3×6
Wed. 11-17 – 8137 steps (30′ = 2.5 mi. LS walk/jog; 10′ Bollywood dancing video); 12-min. Pilates abs video
Thurs. 11-18 – 6609 steps (zero cardio)
Fri. 11-19 – 12715 steps (67′ = LS 5 mile challenge)
Sat. 11-20 – 6071 steps (zero cardio) – concert, busy all day, hosted choir gathering that evening
Sun. 11-21 – 12274 steps (53′ = 3 outdoors miles, 1.5 w. 10 lb. vest)

Nov. 22-25
Mon. 11-22 – 9564 steps (47′ = 3 LS miles, 1 w. 2 lb. weights, 1 w. stretchy band)
Tues. 11-23 – 17125 steps (84′ = 54′ 3 mi. outdoors w. 10 lb. vest; 30′ LS walk/jog)
Wed. 11-24 – 17401 steps (113′ = 43′ LS flat belly miles; 25′ outdoors w. vest; 45′ gardening); ST 4×10 bicycle crunches
Thurs. 11-25 (Thanksgiving Day) – 5434 steps (15′ LS mile w. 2 lb. hand weights)

As you can see I anticipated the Thanksgiving Day feed by ramping up my cardio the 2 days before.  It worked!  But I wouldn’t have done that had I not totally pigged out at the choir party and gained back to 142 lbs.  I was horrified at myself because by the end of this pigout, I was eating things I didn’t even WANT.  Just because they were there!

However, by Thursday I was back to 139, and this AM I was 139.5, which is really not bad at all.  Heading down again now, if my current resolution holds!

It is nice to be able to wear size SMALL in Lands End sport knit pants!  and size 8 in some Eddie Bauer cargo pants!  I am determined to stay here and get down to 135 by the end of the year if I possibly can.  We shall see!

And now, a little something for Claude….

Sam and “the bird!” a 32-pounder!

It was a lovely turkey!  And I have bags of it in my freezer now!  Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!  Hang in there and keep moving that body, in whatever way you choose!

Sara – conspicuous by my absence – sorry…

Whoa.  I had no idea it had been THREE weeks since my last post.  Things have been busy.  The time is a sort of blur and I am feeling very tired the last few days.

The weekend of this first week was opera weekend – Claude and I both saw Boris Godunov, the Met production from New York City simulcast in movie theatres both here in State College and in Paris!  It was pretty cool.  I had a fairly iffy week of exercise, but did finish the biggest part of the digging in my back garden and planted the remaining plants that had been waiting in pots.

I have been managing to stick to my arms/legs/abs-core routine and my Sundays off.  At least, I stick to the rotation.  I haven’t always had the energy for ST…as you will see.

Oct. 18-24, 2010
Mon. 10-18 –  7112 steps (28′ = 2 LS mi.  30′ = dig/garden)  ST: wall pushups 6×12;  5 lb. weights: shoulder press 4×12; lateral raise 7×8; triceps kickbacks 3×8
Tues. 10-19 – 9923 steps (40′ = 3 LS mi., 1 with jogging)  ST: thighmaster 5×16; lying abduction 3×14; lying adduction 3×8; lying double leg raises 3×6
Wed. 10-20 – 3837 steps (150′ dig/garden; no cardio miles).  ST = 12′ Pilates abs video
Thurs. 10-21 – 3761 steps  – no cardio or ST
Fri. 10-22 – 7229 steps (40′ = 3 LS mi., 1 with jogging)  ST: bridges 1×10; cat/camel stretches 1×12; lying single straight leg raises 1×8
Sat. 10-23 – 9925 steps (47′ walk, 2 miles – moderate pace)  ST – cardioglide 2×100.  This was opera/eat out day!
Sun. 10-24 – 6545 steps (rest day but I did 50′ gardening)

This week I decided to attempt to do 4 Leslie or outdoors miles per day.  I may have overdone it a bit…
Oct. 25-31, 2010
Mon. 10-25 – 9723 steps (53′ = 4 LS mi. – 2 fast, 2 with weights/walk belt)  ST: wall pushups 8×10; 5 lb. weights: shoulder press 6×8; lateral raise 6×6; lying triceps lifts 4×16
Tues. 10-26 – 14021 steps (51′ = 4 LS miles, all fast w. 2′ jog at end of each)  ST: lying abduction 4×10; lying adduction 4×8; grand pliés 4×10
Wed. 10-27 – 8641 steps (50′ = 4 LS miles, all fast w. 2′ jog at end of each)  ST: 12′ Pilates abs video
Thurs. 10-28 – 11738 steps (62′ = 5.5 LS miles; 4.5 = fast w. jogs; 1 mi. with stretchy band for arms)
Fri. 10-29 – 10162 steps (30′ = 2.5 LS miles – walk/jog)  – no ST
Sat. 10-30 – 11791 steps (65′ = 4 mi. outside; 3 mi. was intervals of walk/jog, time 15/16′ per mile)  ST: 12′ Pilates abs video
Sun. 10-31 – 6142 steps – rest day

This week I got in my strength training every day except Saturday.  After doing a funeral that morning, I just could not face the Pilates routine…
Nov. 1-7, 2010
Mon. 11-1 – 10605 steps (55′ = 4 LS mi. 2 fast, 2 with weights/walk belt)  ST: wall pushups 4×12; 5 lb. weights: shoulder press 8×10; lat raise 6×8; triceps kickbacks 4×8; dumbbell rows 4×8
Tues. 11-2 – 8849 steps (49′ = 4.5 LS mi. – 1 w. 2 lb. weights for arms – fast miles)  ST: grand pliés 4×10; lying abduction 4×10; lying adduction 2×8; Leslie lunges 2×8; Leslie squats 6×8
Wed. 11-3 – 12424 steps (55′ = 4 LS mi. – fast super challenge)  ST: 12′ Pilates abs video; abdominal curls 1×8;  lying single straight leg raises 2×10; lying straight leg raises 2×8
Thurs. 11-4 – 9288 steps (42′ = 3 LS mi. – 1 w. jog segments, 1 w. 2 lb. weights)  ST: 5 lb. weights: shoulder press 4×8; lateral raises 4×8
Fri. 11-5 – 10076 steps (55′ = 4 LS mi. – fast super challenge)  ST: grand pliés 6×10; Leslie lunges 3×8; calf raises 4×10; bridges 2×8
Sat. 11-6 – 10220 steps (55′ = 4 mi. LS super challenge)     no ST
Sun. 11-7 – 5947 steps, no cardio, rest day

Well, maybe I should cut myself some slack.  I like the 4 mile routine for the most part, and I like the alternating strength training focus.  But I find I’m quite tired now.

It’s true that work has been continuous – if it’s not planning or rehearsal or mass, it’s a funeral.  One this AM, one the previous Saturday and this week we have the parish mission every night.  All goes well and that’s nice, and rewarding.  But tiring.

I will try to get back on my weekly reporting schedule.  Tomorrow should be a better day – I plan to do no “work” work but do some tasks at home that I’ve been putting off.

AND maybe get in my lower-body ST!

Now to check in on your posts and find out what is happening!   🙂   Sara

Sara – new equipment – loving the structure!

Well!  Who would have thought it?  I am turning into a structure freak.  I love this alternation of strength training areas.  It is so much easier to do it if you are targeting one thing at a time.  Sure, Leslie’s DVDs work everything really, but I think I am getting much better results this way.  Also I don’t have to think about what to do each day, I just know, and do it.  HA!

One thing I didn’t mention in the last post – my new froggy shoes!

Vibram Five Fingers shoes! Hobbit-y!

My feet are crossed at the ankles so it looks like I am deformed…but not really!  These keep my toes nice and separated, plus they have a grippy bottom, which is great for doing aerobics on carpet.  They are meant for running with the non-heel strike approach, as well as ordinary uses – back to nature and all that, barefoot without the danger of splinters and glass.  I haven’t used mine outdoors yet but I do love them inside.   I’ve been enjoying toe socks for quite some time, so my feet were ready for these.  Hopefully, there will be no more blisters between my toes from bad toe alignment…

I am getting better at the Pilates abs video that I’ve been doing.  Hm, would you like to see it?  Oh bleah, I am trying to do this embedding thing – am not sure I’ve done it right but here goes anyway…

Oct. 8 – 15, 2010
Fri. 10-8 – 8726 steps (5170 cardio = 42′ = 3 LS/1 legs focus); lying leg abduction 2×16; lying leg adduction 2×8; double leg raises 2×8; grand pliés 5×10
Sat. 10-9 – 11473 steps (6506 cardio = 47′ outdoors walk/run); 12′ Pilates abs video
Sun. 10-10 – 4710 steps (0 cardio)
Mon. 10-11 – 7748 steps (3914 cardio = 40′ = 3 LS/arms, weights); also 45 dig/garden; 5×14 wall pushups
Tues. 10-12 – 10369 steps (4772 cardio = 40′ = 3 LS/1 legs focus); 5×12 lying abduction; 2×10 lying adduction; 2×8 double leg raises; 4×10 grand pliés
Wed. 10-13 – 11484 steps (6440 cardio = 61′ outdoors); 50′ gardening, some digging; 12′ Pilates abs video; 2×5 lying straight leg raises
Thurs. 10-14 – 6674 steps (3812 cardio = 28′ = 2 LS/1 arms focus – used 2 lb. weights for approx. 1/2 of this time)
Fri. 10-15 – 9327 steps (2811 cardio = 2 LS/1 legs focus – squats, lunges x. register as cardio); 1 hr. 30′ of contradancing
Sat. 10-16 – 9585 steps (47′ cardio outside = 3 miles, 1.5 with 10 lb. weighted vest); 12′ Pilates abs video
Sun. 10-17 – 4860 steps (0 aerobic); but 15′ digging, 60′ gardening.  And this was my “rest” day – but gardens wait for no woman…

The real test of all this came this weekend when at last the earth was dry enough to dig.  However, I had decided that I just had to try wearing my new weighted vest for a 1.5 mile walk.  So I did.  Whoof.  Legs and abs and back all said, “hello, Sara!”  And THEN on Sunday I had to dig!  No way around it.  So I did.  I managed to do quite a bit in 1.5 hours; rested;  then made it to mass and played piano without collapsing.  Today I expected to be pretty tired, but actually I’m up early and ready to roll again, since the digging is not quite done.

10 lb. weighted vest!

The calorie burn with this vest is not much more than without it – but I can feel that wearing it is doing good things for my muscles, so I’m looking forward to using it.  I think it’s going to be an abs day thing…since I can really feel the abs kick in to protect my back as it bears the weight.

I have a funny feeling that I’m becoming a Certified Fitness Gadget Nut…

But then I have always been Nutty about one thing or another…

So here’s to nutty fitness and funny froggy shoes!   🙂   Have a great week, all!

Sara – Newly Structured: is the world ready? Am I ready?

Hello.  My apologies.  Working on new laptop.  Last post’s record was on old desktop.  Too lazy to move it.  NOT too lazy to buy new wireless printer this Wed. and install it however!  Woo hoo, things are going to work SO much better.  It will make my new structure easier to maintain.

It’s been rainy and yucky.  Here’s one of the more pleasant photos…

back patio with wet leaves

Those round things are the stepping stones that used to be in the garden.  I need fewer of them now that I have less garden, but haven’t finished digging, so haven’t rearranged them or hauled the leftovers away.  Need any stepping stones, Nancy?

I have been plateau-ed in terms of weight loss for a month now.  GRRRR!  So I realized I had to change something.  I don’t want to eat less so I have to exercise more, and it can’t all be walking/running because the weather’s getting bad – and although I love Leslie DVDs, I need some more intense strength training as well.  So I decided to STRUCTURE my week’s workouts.  AGH.  But it seems to be working.  Today I was 140 lbs. and I’ve been inching down to that all week.  We’ll see how sustainable this routine is.

I’ll rotate focus areas, hitting arms 2x a week, legs 2x a week, abs 2x a week, with rest on Sunday.  I’ll aim for 3 miles a day, whether indoors or out – and I won’t be disappointed in myself if I am too tired to do more than 2.  I’ll try not to be overenthusiastic and wear myself out when my energy level is high, because then I pay for it – see below!

Sept. 26 – Oct. 7, 2010

Sun. 9-26 – 8419 steps (26′ cardio = 1.5 outdoor walking)
Mon. 9-27 – 6148 steps (21′ cardio indoor walking); knee lifts 6×16, thighmaster 6×10
Tues. 9-28 – 10786 steps (25′ cardio = 1.5 outdoor walking); 30′ gardening; 10′ mini-trampoline; knee lifts 2×16; thighmaster 10×10
Wed. 9-29 – 3697 steps (0 cardio)
Thurs. 9-30 – 8741 steps (3 LS miles, 1 w. weights, 1 w. belt); cardioglide 10×10
Fri. 10-1 – 12018 steps (8775 cardio = 68’= 5 LS miles, belt, stretchy band, weights); wall pushups 4×16.  This workout felt good, but it worked everything!  Not too great, if I want to rotate areas.  So the rotation began on Saturday, with the dreaded abs…

Sat. 10-2 – 10903 steps (5542 cardio = 50’= 2 outdoor miles + 1 LS mi); 12′ Pilates abs video; ab curls, knee lifts, cat/camel stretch.  What can I say, I survived the Pilates video!
Sun. 10-3 – 4218 steps – rest
Mon. 10-4 – 7414 steps (4632 cardio = 39’= 3 LS miles/1 arms focus); wall pushups 4×10, shoulder presses 4×10, lateral raises 3×10, triceps kickbacks 2×10 – these last 3 exercises with 5 lb. weights.
Tues. 10-5 – 10672 steps (4371 cardio = 40’= 3 LS/1 legs focus); grand plies 6×12; thighmaster 10×10; lying leg abduction 3×10; lying leg adduction 3×10; double leg raises 2×6; wall squats 2×10
Wed. 10-6 – 8287 steps (4164 cardio = 35’= 2 LS/1 abs focus); 12 ‘ Pilates abs video.  The video was easier this time, thank God!
Thurs. 10-7 – 8195 steps (4282 cardio = 30’= 2 LS/1 arms focus); wall pushups 5×10; shoulder presses 5×12; lateral raises 5×8 – again with 5 lb. weights

So far, this is working well, except I did much too much on Tuesday and the tiredness hit me yesterday.   Usually, I would still be tired today – but I’m not!  There must be something good about this structure thing.  I hope I can sustain it!
