Happy birthday, ElderExercise!

Happy birthday, ElderExercise

This is ElderExercise’s birthday! The first post ever was on February 29th. Naomi, who moved west to greener pastures got the idea that February 2008, and people have come and gone, I am still around, and hopefully we are all here for a long time.
Looking at my Google Calendar, I realized that I have been keeping track of my exercise for a longer time. I started writing what I did on December 2007, recording my steps and later other forms of exercise. I find that it helps me keeping focused. Don’t you?

Sara – schedules finally done, snow still here…

Bonjour, tout le monde!  Well, my leak is no longer leaking – the guy who came to clean the snow off the roof said that it may relate to my attic being too warm, so I blocked off my attic door using a sort of homemade method & it seems to be working.  Frankly, I hope it’s not tested with more snow & icicles, since these are finally melting…even if there were a crocus poking through, I could not see it yet!  😦   And the sun is…well, here it is…

February sun

The week:  Feb. 15-22

Monday the 15th – down with a sinus infection – 2097 reluctant steps.

Tuesday – 5681 (1541 aerobic LS)

Wed. 1391 – needed rest again

Thurs. 4910 (1600 aerobic LS)

Fri. 9548, none aerobic – I went contradancing so I definitely broke a sweat but not f0r 10 minutes at a time!

Sat. 9878 (4343 aerobic) – aren’t those serendipitous numbers?  Went for a long walk to Starbucks where I sat & read on my Kindle.  🙂

Sun. 7339 (2478 aerobic LS)

Mon.  6278 (3118 aerobic LS) – a perfectly exhausting work day but I was so glad it was over that I had plenty of energy for Leslie!

It feels great to get out into the world again, even if it is still cold!  I have been visiting Venice and Barcelona as well as Paris, courtesy of Flickr and 23, but photos don’t allow walking, I fear.    Here’s wishing you all a bit of spring…

Claude – Aerobic week

Quite a satisfactory week even though we are still having boring and grey weather.
Again, I went to hospital and exercised on their elliptic bike (28mn in aerobic zone). They explained that the magic number that I mentioned last week was in fact the result of tests done on the guys running for the Tour de France to find out what was their most effective heart rate. It seems that above that magic number, the body will use sugars, and that is quite useful for sprinting, but it is endurance that burns fat and that’s what I’m after.

Also at one point, they mentioned tri-glycerides (hope that’s what they are called in English too) and I said that I had cholesterol but didn’t have those and was quite surprised to learn that what I didn’t have was excess tri-glycerides that would appear in my blood test, but that the darn things were ‘parked’ around my waist and in my belly! Again, those are what I am after!
So in fact, when I say 26mn aerobic walking for example, it just means 26mn inzone, (between 120 and 130), I might have done quite a bit above the inzone, thus burning sugar instead of fat!
Another question I asked was: was it OK to count 10mn + 15mn inzone as 25mn. And the answer is yes! As long as segments are at least 10mn, no problem. But nothing below 10mn.

Lynn–beginning to feel spring in the air

Despite a snowy/sleety forecast for the coming week, it’s beginning to feel more like spring around here–birds singing their spring song, a few brave crocuses poking up, the little snow we had is almost gone.

Here’s this week’s tally:

Monday 2/15–30 minute walk outside

Thursday 2/18–15 minute walk plus strength/stretch mat work for about 15 – 20 minutes

Friday 2/19–left work early intending to walk but ended up falling asleep on the couch–oh well, since I rarely sleep during the day, I take that to mean I needed the sleep.

Saturday 2/20–15 minute walk (sciatica acting up)

Sunday 2/21–30 minutes brisk walk outside

Lia – Southern Wanderer

I’ve been away visiting friends in southern and western Germany. It was a lovely time of good talks and fine walks. I didn’t keep a record, but I did walk every day for at least 30 minutes and there were three days of walking an hour. Since returning on Saturday:

Sunday: 60 minutes walking

Monday: 85 minutes walking

Lynn–winter exercise

OK–I think I just need to accept that winter exercise is never going to be as good as exercise at other times of year. Here’s this week’s totals:

Sunday 2/7 30 min walking outside

Wed 2/10–20 min walk outside plus 20 floor exercise (stretch/strength)

Thursday 2/11–15 – 20 min walk outside

Friday 2/12–10 min walk outside plus 10 – 15 min stretch/strength

Saturday 2/13–15 min walk outside

Sunday 2/14 –approx 10 – 15 min walk

The good news is that I’m getting more outdoors exercise, which I enjoy more than indoors walking, but I’m not getting enough of it. I just had my annual physical and I’ve gained weight (no surprise) so I’m resolving to exercise more and eat less (have I heard that before???).

I’m also having some problems w/ my foot and my knee, both of which are aggravated by the march in place and kicking aspect of LS workout. It is staying light later though and we have no snow at this point so going for a walk outside after work is increasingly an option, although a chilly one.
